Garland Newton, of 8631 Orange Ave., Ensley, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Flora F. Newton of Ensley; a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Maxine Chatwood; three sons, Leslie Arnold Newton, Garland Lamar Newton, and Joe Max, all of Pensacola; a sister, Mrs. Lynette Johnson; a brother, Henry Earl Newton; and five grand children. The body will be moved to the Foreman Funeral Home in Andalusia, Ala. Faith Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Entered into eternal rest, Tuesday, January 16, 1973.

Flora Del Finkley Newton Smith Thompson of Pensacola, Florida, resident of Baptist Manor, went to walk in the heavenly garden on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. She was born in Dozier, AL on November 2, 1923 to the parents of Jesse and Nicie Finkley. She was the sixth and last survivor of seven children. A retired employee of Monsanto, she enjoyed growing flowers, cooking, and travel. She was especially loving and generous towards her family. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by husbands, Garland Newton, Wilfred Smith, Willis Thompson and by her eldest son, Lamar Newton. She is survived by her sons, Joe Newton and his wife, Ute; Arnold Newton and his wife, Debbie; her daughter, Eleanor Chatwood and her husband, Roger and her daughter-in-law, Mary Newton. Other survivors include six grandchildren; 8 greatgrandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at Foreman Brown Funeral Home, Andalusia, AL on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with interment at Good Hope Church Cemetery in Dozier, AL. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Pkwy is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be placed online at www.fcfhs.com.

From the Greenville Adocate. Accident Fatal To Local Youth. Charlie Ray Johnson Dies From Injuries After Falling From Truck. Charlie Ray Johnson, 13, died as a result of an accident shortly after noon last Saturday. The popular youth was a member of the 7th grade at the Greenville High School. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Johnson; one brother, Bobby Johnson; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Newton; aunts, Mrs. Esther Nyboe, Phenix City; Mrs. J. C. Sims, Atlanta; uncles, Alfred Phillips, Phenix City; Henry Earl and Garland Newton, Greenville; and a host of other relatives. Funeral services were conducted from Mt. Carmel Church at 3:00 p.m., Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Merton Griffin officiating. Dunklin Funeral Home was in charge of the burial service at the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Sterling Newton, Frank Burt, Terry Burt, Jack Nichols, William Daniels and James Jones. Honorary: Ronald and Lamar Newton, cousins of Charlie Ray.
