Mr. and Mrs. George Newton heard from both their sons in the service last week, and both are well and say that they are "doing fine." They hope to be home again some day soon. Both are in the Pacific. Cpl. Cuple Newton has been in the service since June 10, 1942, and is with the Wildcat Division, in the Central Pacific. He went overseas in July, after training at Camp Rucker. Houston Newton, F 1/C. U.S. Navy, has been in the service since August 26, 1943. He took part in the Normandy invasion, and spent five months in the European Theater. Returning to the States for hospitalization, he went overseas again two months ago, and is now eligible to wear both the European and Asiatic Theater ribbons.

Mrs. Malinda Elizabeth Cooper, age 69, died Friday afternoon, July 10th, at a local hospital, following a short illness. Mrs. Cooper was born July 24, 1873, the daughter of Robert and Edna Pamelia Perry, in Butler County near the Central community, and lived her entire life in this county. She was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church and was an active, faithful worker in the church and community affairs. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at eleven o'clock at Ebenezer East Church, conducted by Rev. R. Z. Mullins, with burial in the church cemetary. Surviving besides her husband, are one son, J.W. Cooper; one daughter, Mrs. George Newton; six grandchildren; one brother, J.R. Perry; three sisters, Mrs. J.W. Lowery, Greenville; Mrs. L. D. Gresham, Atmore, and Mrs. Sam McCoy, Pensacola. The pallbearers were Walter Foster, R. B. Lowery, Vollie Cooper, Tee McCoy, J.R. McCoy, and Robert Gresham. Dunklin-Johnson Funeral Home in charge.
