Mrs. Maggie L. Newton, 80, died in a local hospital Sunday, after a lengthly illness. Mrs. Newton, the widow of the late William Newton, was a member of a pioneer Bulter County family. She had been residing in Greenville for several years, coming here from the home near Damascus Church after the death of her husband. Mrs. Newton will be missed by a large circle of friends in Greenville and in the Midway community. Survivors include a son, Theron Newton, Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. J. Lamar Pierce, Greenville; a brother, John Pollard, Brewton; seven grandchildred, and great-grandchild. Funeral services at five o'clock Monday afternoon from the Damascus Baptist Church, with Rev. Ralph Mjllins officiating, assisted by Rev. Merton Shell. Burial in church cemetery with Dunklin Funeral Home directing.

E. Everett Newton dies after lengthy illness. Edward Everett Newton, 53, died in a local hospital early Monday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Newton was the son of Mrs. W. A. Newton and the late Mr. Newton, a native of Butler county, and he had spent practically his entire life in Butler, with the exception of several years in Luverne, where was connected with a lumber concern. Mr. Newton was owner and operator of the Greenville Bus Line, and the patrons of teh line are especially grieved at his passing; as his friendliness, courtesy and helpful attention endeared him to those who used his busses. Many other friends are saddened by his passing. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lois Russell Newton; a daughter, Miss. Jerry Newton; his mother, Mrs. W. A. Newton; one brother, Theron Newton, all of Greenville; one sister, Mrs. James L. Pierce, Mobile. Funeral services were held from the home on Conecuh street, Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Othis Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, with Dunklin Funeral Home directing.

Miss Jerry Newton to wed Louis Lindsay in Greenville. Greenville, Ala., May 5 -- Mrs. Edward Everett Newton announces the engagement of her daughter, Jerry, to Louis William Lindsay, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fenton Lindsay, of Fairhope. Miss Newton is the grand-daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Russell, of Pigeon Creek, and of Mrs. Maggie Lee Newton, and the late William Alexander Newton. The bride-elect is in her junior year at State Teachers College, Troy, working toward a degree in elementary education. The grandparents of the groom-to-be are Mrs. Elelyn Moore and the late William Moore, of Worchester Park, Surrey, England and the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Perkins Lindsay, of Centerville, Miss. Mr. Lindsay is a student at State Teachers College, Troy, and will be graduated in June with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. The marriage will take place at the First Baptist Church in June.

Mr. and Mrs. Theron Smith Newton, of Greenville, announce the marriage of their daughter, Bettie Landrum, to Samuel Lewis Moon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel George Moon. The marriage was solemnized Jan. 20 in Meridian, Miss. The bride is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Landrum and the late Mr. and Mrs. William Newton. She is a graduate of Greenville High School and attends Howard College, Birmingham, where she is a pledge of Beta Sigma Omicon. Mr. Moon is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Berry Lewis, of Trion, GA., and of the late Mr. and Mrs. William J. Moon, of Winder, GA. His great-grandmother is Mrs. W. E. Holland, of Trion. He is also a graduate of Greenville High School and is presently enrolled at Howard College. Mr. and Mrs. Moon are residing at 2316 S. Highland Ave., Birmingham.

Funeral for Thomas A. Newton was held Tuesday afternoon from Damascus Church near this city, with the Rev. H. Ross Arnold, of the First Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. Harry E. Rogers, of the Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in Damascus Cemetery. Mr. Newton grew to young manhood in this city and was a member of the Butler County High School's championship basketball team as a student, having been awarded a place on the all-state team. Surviving are his widow, who was Miss Haxel Crews, of Eunice, La.; two brothers, E. E. and T. S. Newton; and two sisters, Misses Eula Mae and Gladys Newton.
